38 Anniversary of the Battle of Lurhwayizo

Honoring a Legacy of Courage in Lurhwayizo

The official programme got underway as the people of Lurhwayizo gathered in unity ,to remember a painful yet powerful chapter in our history, where freedom was fought for in the face of brutality and bloodshed.

Addressing the community, Deputy President Paul Mashatile paid tribute to the bravery of Mbulelo Ngono and the fearless youth of the time who stood against oppression to pave the way for a democratic South Africa.

A moving message from Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane. Directing the programme, MEC Sibulele Ngongo highlighted the importance of the programme to the heritage of the province, “The 38th commemoration of the Battle of Lurhwayizo forms part of the Province’s Resistance and Liberation Heritage Route and enhances branding of the Eastern Cape as the Home of Legends. Although the remains of Mbulelo Ngono are still missing, we celebrate his contribution to the liberation struggle and freedom of the country. I look forward to the expedition of going to find his remains and bring them home as we have done with other fallen struggle stalwarts. We will continue to do this with the aim of assisting families who have lost their loved ones as part of the struggle for freedom to embark on a healing process, in line with the resolutions of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.”

A dignified Vote of Thanks by His Majesty Kumkani Vulikhaya Sigcawu echoed the deep significance of the day — a moment to reflect, honour and recommit to the values of freedom, justice and unity.
