Eastern Cape Marks 31 Years of Freedom in Matatiele Celebration

The Eastern Cape government celebrated National Freedom Day on 27 April 2025, at North End Stadium in Matatiele. The day’s events commenced with a 5km and 10km race, ending at the event venue. Enthusiastic runners, both young and old braved the cold to officially activate Freedom Day activities.

Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture MEC, Sibulele Ngongo presided over the day’s programme, and in her address, stressed the importance of honouring Freedom Day as a reminder of South Africa’s journey toward democracy.

Eastern Cape Premier, Honourable Oscar Mabuyane, also reminded the people of Matatiele of the importance of protecting service centres and key infrastructure. He also called on the community to work closely with the provincial government to safeguard the dignity of children, particularly in response to the alarming rise in gender-based violence and sexual offences against minors in the region. Premier Mabuyane further highlighted the enduring legacy of Mr Alfred Nzo, as this year marks the centenary of his birth.

The day’s event not only celebrated our shared history and freedom but also created a vibrant platform for entrepreneurs and artists to connect with new audiences and grow their market.
