Background of the name
The establishment of Mount Frere Public Library was emanating from the meetings which were conducted by Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture in Mount Ayliff under the Directorate of Library and Information Services, and Umzimvubu Local Municipality and other stakeholders who were representing the community of Mount Frere.
The motion was emanated from the meeting that Mount Frere has increased drastically in terms of population so it deserves to have a public library.
Mount Frere Public Library was named with a unanimous decision between uMzimvubu Local Municipality and Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture. Mount Frere Public Library was requested by the community of Mount Frere and stakeholders.
The library was significantly influenced by the Ingwe Tvet College, Primary and High schools and distance learning students.

When it was officially opened?
Mount Frere Public Library was officially opened on the 17 March 2014 by the former MEC of the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Honorable Xoliswa Tom & Former Mayor Khulukazi S.Phangwa.
