The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) MEC, Fezeka Nkomonye will tomorrow, 17 February 2021 attend a drive by memorial service of the late boxing legend and trainer, Mr Mzimasi Mnguni, who passed away on Saturday, 13 February 2021.
“Bra Mzi” as he was affectionately known passed away at the age of 73 after a long illness after suffering a stroke in 2014.The boxing legend produced World Boxing Champions in the country that include Welcome “The Hawk” Ncita, Vuyani “The Beast” Bungu, Mbulelo Botile, Hawk Makepula and Lindi Memani.
MEC Nkomonye will be attending the memorial service with the Eastern Cape Boxing Promoters and Boxing South Africa representatives among other.
“It is with the heaviest heart to receive news of the passing of the boxing legendary Bra Mzi, as he was affectionately known, especially to the boxing fraternity of the province and the rest of the country. He has contributed immensely to the development of boxing in Eastern Cape and raising the flag of the country high, on a global boxing stage”, said MEC Nkomonye.
The President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a Special Provincial Official Funeral Category 2, for the late Bra Mzi. His funeral service will be conducted at his East London home on Saturday, 20 February 2021.
A Special Provincial Official Funeral Category 2 is accorded to distinguished persons specifically designated by the President of South Africa on request by the Premier of a province.
