The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture MEC, Fezeka Nkomonye is relieved that 21 players that survived a tragic bus accident that claimed four lives on Sunday morning have been discharged from hospital. The team members sustained minor injuries and were admitted in hospital.
MEC Nkomonye says though this is a relief, her thoughts and prayers remain with the four members that are still in hospital. 34 netball players including officials were traveling to the Spar netball championships in the Western Cape when the bus they were traveling in overturned near Aberdeen on Monday.
Nkomonye says her department will travel with the families of the victims that died during the accident to identify their remains in a mortuary in Graaf Reinet tomorrow. She says they will transport the remains back to the OR Tambo district.
The department working with the Health department has provided counselling to all the players that were involved in the accident. It is also looking at providing psychological support to the families that lost their loved ones.
