29 SEPTEMBER 2022

Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane will tomorrow, Friday 30 September 2022, close off Heritage Month by unveiling a life size bronze statue of Reverend Canon James Calata and handover 200 houses to Madakeni Village beneficiaries in Keiskammahoek and Dimbaza, respectively.

The unveiling of the statue is the second phase of the project as Premier Mabuyane in September 2020, revealed a marble and granite memorial built as the heritage legacy project dedicated to the life, legacy and the celebration of the 125 years since this progressive religious leader and political icon was born in Keiskammahoek in 1895.

Rev. Calata was one of the prominent leaders from the Eastern Cape who played a very important and prominent role in the struggle for national liberation. He utilized his vast experience as an educator, religious leader and community builder to advance the cause for independence from colonial and apartheid rule in South Africa.

Heritage Month, which recognizes tangible and intangible South African cultural aspects such as creative expressions, music, performing arts, language, food and popular memory, is celebrated annually during the Month of September.

The South African Government has strategically positioned Heritage Month as a vehicle to promote cultural diversity, multiculturalism, nation building, unity and social cohesion.
