Born in Sterkspruit and a mother of two (2) handsome boys. She is a teacher by profession.
She has a long history in politics from Student Movement, Youth Movement, Women's Movement, SACP and ANC. She is a former Member of Umkhonto weSizwe (Underground), the African National Congress's Military wing in Soweto during high repression:1986 to 1990. She Served in Soweto Student Congress and COSAS in high school. She served in South African Student Congress (SASCO) at Tertiary. She has further served as the ANC Youth League's Deputy Secretary from 1994 to 1996, as its Treasurer General, first woman to occupy this position from1996 to 2003. She served in SACP Border Region REC. In 1994-2004, she was elected to serve in the National Parliament serving in National Council of Provinces (NCOP) representing Eastern Cape Province. She was a Chairperson of Public Service Select Committee. She also served in Judiciary Service Commission.
In 2004 she was elected to serve in the Eastern Cape Legislature (ECPL), a position she occupied to date.
She was the first woman to be elected as ANC Regional Chairperson for Ukhahlamba Region now Joe Gqabi Region from 2002 to 2006. She served as the Provincial Secretary for ANC Women's League from 2004 to 2009 , she was First Woman elected as Deputy Provincial Secretary of the ANC in the Eastern Cape from 2006 to September 2008.
She fulfilled a role as ANC Acting Provincial Secretary from 2008 to 2009. She served as a member of the ANC Women's League National Executive Committee in 2012 - 2015. She is an ANC member in good Standing.
- 2008 to 2009, she was appointed as the Eastern Cape MEC for Health.
- 2009 to 2010, she was appointed as the Eastern Cape MEC for Department of Roads & Public Works.
- 2010 to 2014 she was appointed as the Eastern Cape MEC for Social Development & Special Programmes (Women, Children, Older Persons and People with Disabilities).
In 2010, she was awarded with an Honorary Doctorate by Arlington University of Australia, on Community Development. This is a non-disciplinary nosy recognition for work done, not in any Traditional Discipline, in any Higher Institution of Learning but is awarded in Recognition of a Substantial contribution, sacrifice and passion of human condition especially those in destitute and vulnerable. She was further awarded in 2011 with Reverend Baartman Award for serving people with Distinction to bring back their dignity from the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, Circuit 319, Queenstown District. 14 January 2015 she was awarded with Global Humanitarian Award in the United States by Human Rights Activist Reverend Jesse Jackson.
She comes from a strong Christian background.
