The Premier of the Eastern Cape Government, Hon. Phumulo Masualle will lead the Provincial Youth Day Commemoration under the theme, “Live the Legacy: Towards a socio-economic empowered youth”, in Middledrift, Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality on Friday, 29 June 2018.
The 2018 Youth Month is highly significant as the Eastern Cape Government has intensified the implementation of the Provincial Youth Development Strategy and the province is focusing on celebrating the centenary of Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu. The objective of the youth development is to enable men and women to become active participants in activities which fulfil their needs and enable them to participate in all aspects of society. A number of build-up activities were held towards the Provincial Youth Day commemoration including Buffalo City Metro Mayors Cup that was held in East London, Nomenti Rugby Week Tournament in Keiskammahoek and other activities.

These programmes are aimed at highlighting the government’s contribution to youth development, on the other hand instil some values espoused by Nelson Mandela as part of promoting a sense of nation building and social cohesion amongst the youth.  Every year on 16 June South Africa commemorates the 1976 Student uprising that started in Soweto and spread throughout the country, to pay tribute to learners who stood up against the apartheid government and defied being taught in Afrikaans. 2018 marks the 42nd anniversary of the June 16 uprising and other related acts of struggle for freedom. By so doing they stood together and laid down their lives fighting for freedom and the right to equal education.

Observed as a public holiday, the day serves as a reminder that young people in the country were at the forefront of our struggle. It also provides us with an opportunity to take stock of the strides we have made in addressing issues facing the youth. In South Africa we not only commemorate Youth Day but dedicate the entire month of June to the youth.
