The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) MEC Fezeka Bayeni will close of the O.R Tambo Month and officially open a public library to promote reading culture, fight illiteracy and promote library usage in previously disadvantaged areas on Thursday, 31 October 2019 in Libode.
The public library which was built in 2016 and finished towards the end of 2018 is named after a political activist, Mr Mphathisi Nonkobongo and services six (6) nearby schools, the KSD College and Libode Campus.
The official opening of the library will be proceeded by the memorial lecture in honour of Mr Mphathisi Nonkobongo today, 30 October 2019. He was born in 1972, Gxulu, Libode, where he grew up and was introduced to politics when he was in Junior Secondary School. His love for politics grew in the early 90s and he was active in the structure of the ANCYL. He serviced in various levels of the ANCYL from the branch and the sub-region. He became ill in December 2012 and didn't recover until he passed on in March 2013.
Libraries are regarded as the development hubs as they enhance access to information gaps, they minimise economic and social crisis. The Department in partnership with O.R Tambo District Municipality and Nyandeni Local Municipality is of the view that reading opens doors of learning for everyone and that the culture of lifelong learning and reading contributes significantly to the overall well-being of all people.
