The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) will host the Maskhandi Music Festival under the theme ‘Siqhayisa ngengoma - the battle of Maskhandi’ on Sunday on 04 November 2018 in Mt Frere (KwaBhaca), Alfred Nzo District. The purpose of the Maskhandi Music Festival is to use Arts and Culture to promote social cohesion across society and afford district artists a platform to showcase their talent in the genre of Maskhandi music.
  
The festival is dedicated towards celebrating the better life of the prolific liberation icon who was born with the Alfred Nzo District, Oliver Reginald Tambo. Maskhandi music has grown in the Eastern Cape and other parts of the country over the years and many community members have turned to love this genre due to the influence of the late Saba Mbixana’s programmes, “Lavuth’ibhayi and Siwel’uthukela” in Umhlobo Wenene fm. DJ Saba Mbixane who was from Alfred Nzo District, Mt Frere won SATMA awards for his Maskhandi programmes and his contribution in the promotion of Maskhandi music
  
In addition this year festival will be characterised by spirit of unity, reconciliation and diversity. Maskhandi festival is an opportunity to popularize and market the Maskhandi music in the Eastern Cape which seeks to promote a better life for all.
