The countdown has begun and looming as the Department in partnership with, South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and Eastern Cape Sport Federation (ECSF) and Buffalo City Metro Municipality (BCMM) will host the Provincial Sporting Games known as the Steve Vukile Tshwete (SVT) Games for the 3rd year in 2018 after merging the Premier Games and SALGA EC Municipal Games, in East London, from 28 - 30 November 2018.
The purpose of the games are to encourage and promote mass participation in sport especially in disadvantage communities and afford the youth in the province an opportunity to live healthy and active lifestyles in sport which will assist in keeping them away from crime and other social ills.
The games are held annually so as to identify new sporting talents and also use this platform to identify players that might represent the province at the National Games.
The games are named after Steve Vukile Tshwete who was the champion of sport development to the youth of Eastern Cape and played a significant role in the unification of sport in the country, particularly rugby.
If he was still alive, he would have turned 80years this year and it's befitting that we keep celebrating and highlighting the immerse contribution he has played in sport so as to educate the youth on how sport has unified this country.
It is indeed with great excitement that as the sport loving people of the Eastern Cape we are coming together for the SVT Games in the Buffalo City Municipality that is hosting the games for the second time.
The 2018 games are also very important to us as they take place during the centenary of Tata Nelson Mandela and Mama Albertina Centenary. Programmes and tributes throughout the year took place to highlight the selfless role that was played by the internationally recognized icons of South Africa's glorious liberation struggle who would have turned 100 years if they were still alive this year. The two stalwarts of South Africa's liberation struggle and pioneers of the country's freedom and democracy, laid a solid foundation for all of us, black and white to coexist and live in peace and harmony in an environment that promotes national reconciliation, unity, social cohesion, social justice and socio-economic prosperity.
Young players from 8 districts who were selected through a process of games played in their local municipalities and districts level to form a final squad that will represent their district at the provincial level.
The sporting codes that will be played are namely; Goalball, Netball, Volleyball, Rugby, Table tennis, Football and Boxing.
The official opening of the SVT Games will be held at the Buffalo City Stadium, East London on 28 November 2018.
