The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), MEC Bulelwa Tunyiswa will tomorrow, 29 May 2018 lead the celebration of International Museum Day (IMD) under the provincial sub-theme “Celebrating heroes and heroines,” in Komani, Chris Hani District. The objective of IMD is to raise awareness of the fact that, “Museums are important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.”
The Honourable MEC Tunyiswa will award learners who were part of an essay writing competition based on the sub-them of Africa Month and provincial IMD sub-theme. This competition was part of Africa Month and build up activities to IMD.
Furthermore the Eastern Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee (ECPGNC) will share information relating to standardization of place names in the province. Place naming is a process that we should embrace and participate in as it is geared towards naming places and geographical features after our heroes and heroines we can identify with and are proud of. The celebration of IMD falls part of the Department’s mandate to promote nation building and reconciliation through active involvement in commemoration of National Days and Social Cohesion. The Department provides oversight support and management to 17 province-aided museums in Eastern Cape.
The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museum Day in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society, and it has been steadily gaining momentum ever since. In 2016, IMD garnered record-breaking participation with more than 35,000 museums hosting events in some 145 countries.
