The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) MEC Fezeka Bayeni will send off 8 Local Amateur Boxers to the State of Lower Saxony, Germany at a media briefing session on Wednesday, 26 June 2019 in East London.

The 8 boxers (4 males and 4 females) who are part of a delegation of 2 coaches and 1 Departmental official will participate in various Championships from 29 June to 7 July 2019.  The exchange programme forms part of the standing twinning cooperation between Eastern Cape Government and German Federation State.

This exchange programme has developed a significant number of athletes, in this case, the IBO welterweight champion Thulani Mbenge who was recently named the Boxing SA's Boxer of the Year at the South African Boxing Awards.

Ludumo Lamati, the SA Junior Featherweight Champion is also one of the boxers who was founded and natured from this programme.

The provincial Government of the Eastern Cape and the Government of the German Federal State of Lower Saxony on 20 October 2015 signed a Joint Declaration of Intent in Bhisho to foster socio-economic development, foreign investment, and cooperation in areas of technology, sport, HIV/AIDS and tourism in their respective Provinces.

This partnership is largely focusing on the International Voluntary Service sports exchange programmes between the Landessportbund Niedersachsen and the DSRAC, where teams, coaches and team officials exchange different techniques and opinions on how to improve competing with each other.
