19 June 2017 - The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) MEC Dr.(h.c) Pemmy Majodina will tomorrow, 20 June 2017 hand over 50 bicycles, 100 school shoes and sanitary towels to needy learners as part of the Youth Month programme in Duncan Village, East London.

The programme is in partnership with the Buffalo City Municipality, MTN and Thembekile Mzantsi Foundation.

Over 200 disadvantaged youth from poverty stricken families will benefit and receive bicycles they will use to travel to school, sanitary towels and school shoes. These leaners have been identified jointly with the Department of Social Developments’ Special Programme and the Department of Education.

During the event the Gompo Arts Centre will also showcase their skills in a form of parade and exhibition.
Duncan Village has been chosen this year to host the programme due to increasing unemployment rate, violence, crime and teenage pregnancy in the area.
Handing over of bicycles, school shoes and sanitary towels is one of the build-up activities to the Provincial Youth Day Commemoration and one of programmes and initiatives by Government to empower the youth.
Every year on 16 June South Africa commemorates the 1976 Soweto uprising to pay tribute to learners who stood up against the apartheid government. They stood together and laid down their lives fighting for freedom and the right to equal education.
In South Africa we not only commemorate Youth Day but dedicate the entire month of June to the youth. Government and its agencies such as the National Youth Development Agency will over the month host a number of engagements including youth expos, dialogues and youth entrepreneur hubs to showcase opportunities available to young people. This year marks the 41st anniversary of the Soweto uprising.
The Provincial Youth Day Commemoration will be celebrated on 23 June 2017 in Aliwal North.
