The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) will host National Recreation Day (NRD) and Big Walk under the theme #Ichoose2BeActive in Mdantsane and Port Elizabeth on 04 and 06 October 2019 respectively.
#Ichoose2BeActive is a nationwide campaign by government in response and addressing the problem of the growing epidemic obesity, sedentary lifestyles and increase in deaths attributed to communicable diseases.
The campaign was launched by the National Department of Sport and Recreation in 2015 and intends to educate the society to engage themselves in recreational activities such as rope skipping, netball, walking as part of their lifestyle so that they may promote a healthy living.
This campaign is open to all citizens, age, gender, nationality and even people with disability. The citizens may participate as individuals, families, schools, old age homes. Children are also welcome to play their part as there would be activities like jumping castle and face painting.
DSRAC is calling to all citizens to dedicate few hours of their day and participate in physical activities for at list 2-3 hours. This could provide them with the first-hand experience and motivation needed to continue participating voluntarily to physical activities as one realizes the personal and social benefits.
